Tornados Honor Senior Marina Thompson; Set for First Round at Pfeiffer on Tuesday

Box Score BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's tennis team (8-7, 4-4 USA South) dropped its regular season finale 7-2 to Southern Virginia University (13-2, 6-1 USAS) on Saturday at the McCoy Tennis Complex. By virtue of their regular-season, the Tornados clinched a spot in the USA South Conference Tournament. BC will play at Pfeiffer University on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Misenheimer, North Carolina in the First Round of the conference tournament.

The victory came on Senior Day for Brevard College. Senior Marina Thompson, who will be graduating from Brevard College with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, was honored in a special pre-match ceremony.

Brevard earned two victories, both coming in singles play, in the matchup with the Knights. Junior Madison Bowen played a strong match in number three singles to take a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Fellow junior Jada Ore then battled with her opponent in number five singles to take a win in a thrilling match that went to a tiebreaker.

Hannah Hersh (no. 1 singles), Gracie Spangler (no. 2), Brooke Garland (no. 4) and Sophie Trantham (no. 5) also competed for Brevard in singles play. Hersh and Spangler teamed up in number one doubles with Garland and Trantham as BC's number two doubles team. The doubles competition concluded with Ore and Bowen going to a tiebreaker in a defeat to SVU's number three doubles duo.

With the completion of the conference regular season, the seeding for the entire 2024 USA South Women's Tennis Tournament has been determined. The tournament consists of the top-eight teams in each the Conference and is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 23 with first round matches hosted by the higher-seeded team in that matchup.

The semifinals and finals are set for Friday-Saturday, April 26-27 on the campus of N.C. Wesleyan University.

As the fifth seed, Brevard will travel to no. 4 seed Pfeiffer for a matchup on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the First Round of the USA South Conference Tournament. With a win, the Tornados will advance to the conference semifinals hosted by N.C. Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
