The Sword and Sorcery Revival: Why Steven Kostanski’s Deathstalker Remake is a Must-Watch

The 80s called, and they want their epic fantasy back! But here’s the twist: it’s not just nostalgia driving the resurgence of sword and sorcery films. With He-Man and the Masters of the Universe set to hit screens next year, the stage is set for a new era of magical mayhem. And leading the charge is Deathstalker, a bold remake of the 1983 cult classic, helmed by none other than Psycho Goreman director Steven Kostanski. (Check out Cody Hamman’s glowing review of it HERE.)

I had the privilege of chatting with Kostanski and star Daniel Bernhardt, and their passion for this project was downright infectious. Sadly, a technical glitch devoured our interview like a dragon hoarding gold, but I’m here to share the highlights of our conversation. As a die-hard fan of the 80s sword and sorcery boom (with a soft spot for Deathstalker II), Kostanski wasn’t just remaking a film—he was resurrecting a genre. While he’s stayed true to the original’s aesthetic rather than a full-blown overhaul, there are plenty of Easter eggs for longtime fans to uncover.

And this is the part most people miss: The Kickstarter campaign, though not fully funding the project, played a pivotal role in bringing Deathstalker to life. It specifically enabled Kostanski to prioritize practical effects—a rarity in today’s CGI-dominated landscape. Independent films often struggle to allocate budget for pre-production FX, but thanks to backers, the team crafted the jaw-dropping practical effects that make this film a visual feast.

Daniel Bernhardt, known for his memorable henchman roles in franchises like John Wick and The Matrix, finally steps into the spotlight as Deathstalker. Watching him wield swords and shields, drawing on decades of martial arts expertise, feels like witnessing a dream come true. If you’ve ever thrilled to the clashing steel and mystical worlds of sword and sorcery, this remake is a cinematic treasure you won’t want to miss.

But here’s where it gets controversial: In an age of digital wizardry, is there still a place for practical effects? Kostanski’s commitment to old-school craftsmanship raises a question: Are we losing something magical by relying too heavily on CGI? Let’s debate this in the comments—I’m all ears!

Deathstalker (2025) Plot:

The Kingdom of Abraxeon is under siege by the Dreadites, minions of the long-dead sorcerer Nekromemnon. When Deathstalker retrieves a cursed amulet from a battlefield littered with corpses, he’s branded by dark magic and becomes the target of monstrous assassins. To survive, he must break the curse and confront the rising evil. Death is just the beginning… of an adventure that will leave you breathless.

Deathstalker slashes its way into theaters exclusively on October 10th, 2025.
