Get ready for an inspiring event that celebrates the power of storytelling! The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) are joining forces to host the 3rd IGAD Media Awards, an initiative that shines a spotlight on the incredible work of journalists and media professionals across the Horn of Africa.
But here's where it gets controversial... In a region facing the harsh realities of climate change, these awards recognize the stories that capture the resilience and solutions of communities. With the theme "Storytelling for Climate Action: For a Secure, Resilient, and Stable Region," the 2025 IGAD Media Awards will honour those who bring attention to the issues and inspire action.
The event, taking place in Addis Ababa from November 28-29, 2025, will feature an awards ceremony and a knowledge-sharing fair. It's a unique gathering of regional policymakers, journalists, and innovators, all coming together to celebrate the impact of storytelling.
This year's edition is made possible by the support of some incredible Pan-African partners. Pulse of Africa, a leading media house, and Exim Bank, a financial institution dedicated to regional development, are both on board to advance authentic African narratives and empower media professionals.
Speaking about Ethiopia's role, a State Minister from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the country's commitment to climate action and media empowerment. They highlighted initiatives like the Green Legacy, showcasing how environmental sustainability and development can go hand in hand. By supporting journalists, Ethiopia aims to amplify voices that drive awareness and unite the region in the fight against climate change.
H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the IGAD Executive Secretary, through his representative, Mr. Abebaw Bihonegn, emphasized IGAD's commitment to partnership and regional cooperation. The IGAD Media Awards, according to Dr. Gebeyehu, embody the belief that storytelling is a powerful force for change and progress.
Preparations are well underway, with a Jury of 21 distinguished media professionals from IGAD Member States ready to lead the selection process. This diverse group will ensure that the best stories are recognized and celebrated.
