Are there any good companies to directly sell a used car to in the SF or East Bay areas? I know there's Gulliver and Cash for Cars in the San Jose area. Generally speaking, will selling this way get you a little less or a lot less?

Is there a CarMax in your area? Carmax buys cars at or below trade-in value, but does save you the hassle of selling it yourself.

Another option is a consignment specialist. I had used one to sell a car back in 2006. The fee was $500, but the car sold for "dealer" price so I recouped the cost. Also--The consignment dealer offered financing for buyers, which I could not. This is particularly valuable if you're selling a more expensive car.

It will get you a lot less than selling as a private party. If it's not a popular car they won't take it, but may take it on consignment and you'll get even less that way.

There's a CarMax out near Sacramento I think. But even there, you'll get less than PP.

All that holds for unencumbered cars (i.e., paid for, clear title).

You could try wheels and deals on el camino in santa clara. For 30 days on their lot you pay $298 (half up front, the other half when it sells, if it doesn't sell in that 30 days, you can take it off the lot and only lose the first $149). They have different options/services for selling your car.

Since this was posted in the Pricing section originally, I decided to leave it for a day to see what kind of help you might get there. However, the question you have asked is quite particularly of a regional nature, so I've moved it to your regional section, where it probably should have been posted in the first place. I hope this helps, and I wish you well in your efforts. :)

Nope. I posted in this section originally and it was moved to the pricing section. You've moved it back to where it started. Along the way I feel I've received exactly the help I was looking for. Thanks to all!

I dont recommend wheels and deals at all. I put my 2000 Tahoe there about 4 years ago...(same management) and someone ate food in my car on the lot..and left french fries and wrappers in my car. I also got door dings. I totally would stay away from there.

Did you sell the Tahoe?? (guess not considering your context) I have seen Miatas blow through there pretty fast, good if your looking to sell! The poster is looking for a place to sell his car at trade value, he can get that or more here. Simply put..... Give him another option....

No, I didnt sell the Tahoe after being there about 3 weeks..I ended up finding someone on craigslist. That is where I recommend selling and buying cars (if you know a bit about cars). I just bought my last miata off craigslist. I sold my first miata on craigslist too.

If he is trying to sell quickly..do not list the car at trade value..or someone will think there is something wrong with it. Do slightly below KBB private party value. It will sell at that price if it doesnt have major issues.

agree with Steve-90,
Craigslist is excellent for Bay area cars.

Monitor it for a week and see how many cars are listed and sold.
The ones that are priced right (not too high) sell very quickly.

if you have a miata, this IS the right time to sell.
if it doesn't need any work, it could sell within a week;
and just might sell within a few days, or sooner.... :)

Craigslist is where I got my 4th Miata, and I sold a co-workers 2000 F250SD there pretty fast as well. Do mulitple area postings, that is the key. Example I listed the F250 in Bay Area, Sacramento, and Monterey.

I apologize for my share in the confusion. However since you weren't asking for "pricing" help, but a local (to you) sales outlet, I still feel that it best fit this section according to the forum's guidelines. Either way, I'm very happy to know that you got the help you sought. :) Sorry, thanks, and good luck!

How long did it take and what was the original asking price? I get the feeling the OP is looking for a quick sale.

I am probably looking for a quick sale, but for the record, it's my gf's 91 Jeep Wrangler (that she "replaced" with a Mazda5), not my Miata.
