The race for the Sportsman Division championship at Bowman Gray Stadium is getting tighter and tighter.
Defending champion Chase Robertson sits just four points behind the steady Zack Ore with three weeks left in the season. On Saturday night, it was Ore who beat Robertson to the checkered flag in the lone 20-lap Sportsman race.
There were just three races on Saturday before rain cancelled the rest of the schedule.
John Holleman, who nearly didn’t make the commute from his home in Knoxville, Tennessee, because of the threat of rain, won the Modified 100-lap race just before the rain hit.
“I feel like it takes a ton of perseverance, and these 100-lap races have been evading me since I started over here when I was 14 years old,” Holleman said on the Bowman Gray Stadium website. “So, year 14 over here I finally got me one.”

It was Holleman’s second win of the season with the other one coming on June 15.
Burt Myers continues to lead the points in the Modified as he chases his 11th Stadium championship. Defending champion Brandon Ward is 20 points behind.
In the other race on Saturday, Andy Southern won for the fifth time in the Street Stock Division.
“Man, I can’t believe this,” Southern told the Stadium’s website. “Five wins – this is something you dream of. I can’t thank people around me enough. It’s the first night that all my boys have been here for a win. It’s pretty special.”
While Southern won for the fifth time, Christian Joyce continues to lead in the points. He has a 32-point lead on Brad Lewis with three races left in that division.
Sitting in great shape with three weeks left in the 76th season is A.J. Sanders in the Stadium Stock Division. He has a 62-point lead on Chuck Wall as Sanders goes for his fourth title and third in a row.
As for the tight Sportsman Division, it could likely come down to the last few laps on Aug. 24, the final night of racing. Robertson is trying to repeat as champion, something Tommy Neal did in 2021 and ’22.
As for Ore, he’s trying to win his first championship and has remained consistent all season.
“I had a really good car,” Ore said on Saturday night. “I tried to race Chase as clean as I could without turning him. He cut me off a little bit. I let out on it. I felt like I did it as clean as possible, and we’re going to win this the right way.”
This Saturday, there will be two 50-lap Modified races with two 20-lap Sportsman races along with a 20-lap Street Stock and either one or two Stadium Stock races.
